Alex Smith serves as a Business Advisory Director at Creative Planning Business Services, where he co-leads the firm’s turnaround and restructuring group. With more than 30 years of experience across corporate leadership, restructuring and international operations, Alex brings a global perspective and hands-on expertise to organizations undergoing transition.

Alex has held a wide range of leadership and fiduciary roles, including CEO, CFO, CRO, Turnaround Advisor, Restructuring Advisor, Court-Appointed Receiver, Trustee and Investment Banker. He has worked with companies navigating both healthy and distressed conditions, supporting clients through operational turnarounds, refinancings and strategic sales in the U.S., Europe and the Pacific Rim. His experience spans both out-of-court restructurings and formal in-court proceedings, representing debtors, creditors and equity sponsors with equal diligence and strategic insight.

Alex’s industry experience is broad, covering manufacturing and industrials, mining, energy, construction, agriculture and food processing, aerospace and defense, wholesale distribution, healthcare, financial services, and retail. He is known for efficiently managing high-stakes challenges while delivering practical, result-oriented solutions.

Before joining Creative Planning, Alex served as the Director of Global Market Development at the leading healthcare supply chain consortium founded by the leading healthcare suppliers in the industry. In this role, he led international expansion efforts across Canada, Europe and Asia/Pacific, overseeing market assessments, business planning and go-to-market strategies.

Earlier in his career, Alex held financial and strategic planning roles at various blue-chip medical supply and distribution companies. He supported both manufacturing operations and commercial teams at regional and global levels.

Alex holds a Bachelor of Science degree in international business from Trinity University and a Master of Business Administration degree, with honors, from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. A former board member of the Colorado Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association (TMA), he is also a multi-time recipient of TMA’s Transaction of the Year Award, garnering the award in 2017 and 2021.<sup>1</sup>
